God’s Presence – Psalm 114

Tremble at the Presence of the Lord

1 When Israel went out from Egypt,
the house of Jacob from a people of strange language,
Judah became his sanctuary,
    Israel his dominion.

The sea looked and fled;
    Jordan turned back.
The mountains skipped like rams,
    the hills like lambs.

What ails you, O sea, that you flee?
O Jordan, that you turn back?
O mountains, that you skip like rams?
    O hills, like lambs?

Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
at the presence of the God of Jacob,
who turns the rock into a pool of water,
the flint into a spring of water.

Sermon Discussion Questions

1. What do you know of Israel’s presence in Egypt? Take some time to revisit what that time was like in the first chapters of Exodus. What did it feel like for them to leave Egypt?
2. Beyond the crossing of the Red Sea and crossing the Jordan, what were some other challenges the Israelites faced in the wilderness? (an example would be needing water) Share how God provided in each of those situations. (Maybe share how God has provided for you in 2020)
3. What are other places in the Bible that share of God’s presence being experienced?
4. Where has been a place where you have “sensed” God’s presence mightily? Why do you remember that time?
5. Should we be sensing God’s presence everyday? How do we achieve this?
6. How do you sense God’s presence on Sunday or Wednesdays when the family of God meets? How can you be praying for God’s presence for people on Sundays?
